Weimar golf course rated in Top 25

A 75 year-old golf course just eight or so miles east of Schulenburg has been ranked in the Top 25 among nine-hole facilities in Texas. Weimar Golf Club was found at the number 17 spot in an issue of the Dallas Morning News.
The paper rates courses each year with differing categories such as the Top 100 Courses in Texas, Top 50 You Can Play (public), Top 25 Expensive Courses $75 and above, Top 25 High-Priced Courses $50-74, Top 25 Economy Courses $49 and below and Top 25 Nine-Hole Courses, to name a few.
To determine the lists, a strict course rating criteria and a panel full of golf experts in Texas are used to validate the rankings every 12 months. The course rating criteria includes: versatility, shot making, design, afterthoughts, beauty, maintenance and enjoyment. For the Top 25 Nine-Hole Courses list, the rankings are strictly determined by a combination of Texas Golf panel members’ votes in 2015 and rankings from the previous nine years.
Weimar Golf Club was not ranked on last year’s list and seems to be gaining recognition from individuals across the state.
Dating back to the early 1920s, Henry “Hans” Brasher, the Brasher Motor Company founder, and Tom Hill (Hill Park is named after him), started playing the game of golf with three holes in the middle of a large cow pasture next to US Highway 90. With the excitement growing in their own games of golf and from others involved, the three-hole course turned into a nine-hole course featuring circular sand greens. The sand greens were oiled with motor oil and smoothed out with a pipe drag to aid in leveling out the sand.
The years went on and after almost a decade of existence, the greens were remodeled in late 1949. World War II veterans who were returning to Weimar decided that with volunteer labor and free use of the county and city road building equipment they could construct new grass putting surfaces or “greens.” So, within a year, this task was completed and the golf course resembled some of what it looks like today.
In 1967, the Sparks family gift-deeded 110 acres to the City of Weimar for recreational use only.
The look of the course once again evolved and expanded in order to provide a safer course with less danger of being struck by other golf balls. Three greens on the west side were moved to the east side of the intersecting creek that runs through what is now holes No. 4 and 8 on the golf course.
The course did not get to where it is today without the efforts from many volunteers and staff members throughout the years. The City of Weimar has played a huge role in the success of the golf course and, with its help and cooperation, the facility has been a strong benefit to the community of Weimar.
Weimar Golf Club hosts golf tournaments throughout the year and is home to the memorable “1:30 group” – a game that has been going on with the same format each and every day of the year (except for Mondays when the course is closed) since the early 1980s. The course plays to a max of 6,000 yards off of the men’s tees and approximately 5,000 off of the women’s. Seniors’ tees were added a few years back to accommodate the wise and long-standing golfers.
Green and membership fees for Weimar Golf Club are also among the lowest around. Tuesday through Thursday, 18 holes cost $15, while the green fee for Friday-Sunday and holidays is $20. Family memberships (two or more) are only $500 per year and singles are $400. Youth (17 and under) and young adult (18-22) memberships are also available.
Carts are available for rental and members can rent cart sheds for $200 per year. Weimar Golf Club, Inc. is affiliated with the Texas Golf Association and the United States Golf Association.
